Energy and Housing Group

The Group is focusing on creating a stronger and more sustainable community using two core principles:

Firstly a mantra of good sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Secondly, by always staying true to the three central themes of Community, Economy, and Environment.

Through these core principles, the group will aim to help forge a more liveable place, a more productive place and a more sustainable place.

Looking at these opportunities as a community!

Activities

  • Existing Housing

As a first step, the Group will collect exact data for the current housing stock and identify different houses by age type and individual needs assessment. Following that it will seek to advise on partial and full fabric retrofits to reduce the overall energy demand of each house by insulating the building envelope.

  • New Housing

Working with other OC Groups and external agencies the goal will be to improve the mix of housing within the village, with particular encouragement of affordable housing that will attract a more diverse range of residents in the future. For example, this might have a focus on young locals, families, older residents downsizing, and artists/craft people wishing to live and work here.

  • Energy

The aims will be to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for existing houses and avoid fuel poverty in the future, alongside the encouragement of any new housing to be of the highest sustainable standards possible. The Group will look at different forms of LZCGT and make recommendations for what works best given the geographic location. It will also look at more centralised district energy plant that transforms the way the community produces and shares energy.

  • Transport

One important key to the future carbon footprint and viability of the core village services is to maintain the connection across the Clyde by water and cement the heart of Kilcreggan as a Transport hub which continues to link bus to ferry to rail on the other side of the water.
